Today on Tuesday January 29, in the lovely home of the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, Chika Unigwe will be awarded the 2012 Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Literary Award.
Nsukka means a lot to Chika. It is the University in which she spent many of her formative years, the context that opened up her mind to dream, the unlikely town where she met her Belgian husband and father of her 4 boys. Today, the red earth of Nsukka welcomes back one of its latest literary products!
Chika won the prize for her book "On Black Sister's Street". This is no ordinary book! It takes on a difficult issue in our society, brings it to life, and challenges how we have been socialized to demonize people that have made difficult choices. Chika, tells the haunting story of four very different women who left Nigeria for the riches of Europe and who are thrown together by bad luck and big dreams into a sisterhood that will change their lives. At the first TEDxEuston in 2009, she spoke passionately about her journey in writing "On Black Sister's Street" and contributed immensely to defining the character and ethos of TEDxEuston. After speaking at that event, she offered to join the organising team and since then has been a highly cherished member of the TEDxEuston family.
Today, we join the rest of the world in celebrating our very own sister, Chika Unigwe. We share her joy and especially the joy of her husband and children who have stood by her all these years. Chika loves Igbo proverbs so.....we will celebrate her with this one...
